Bird flu spreads to sixth province in Vietnam

HANOI (Thomson Financial) – Bird flu has spread to a sixth province in Vietnam, the government said Friday.

The H5N1 virus had killed around 40 ducklings on a farm in the Mekong delta province of Ben Tre, the national animal health department said.

Also affected are the provinces of Cao Bang, Nam Dinh and Ha Nam in the north, Quang Tri in the centre and Tra Vinh in the south.

Vietnam, one of the countries worst hit by the virus, had managed to control the situation with mass culls and vaccinations, but it resurfaced in May and October.

Bird flu has killed 46 people in Vietnam since it first hit in 2003, while the global death toll is 205, according to the World Health Organization.
